It is claimed that the word ottoman has its origins in the word 'divan'. Derived from Eastern way of life, both words referred to a backless, padded seat. While this might have been the earlier meanings of ottoman, in a lot of countries (especially in the US), an ottoman refers to an upholstered footstool.

While ottomans can mingle well with a variety of chair types, most of the foot-rest variety work best with upholstered chairs. Of course, chairs serve a number of functions (reading, watching TV or simply a place to relax with friends). Before buying matching chairs and ottomans, it is good idea to decide on the comfort level of your chair. For instance, do you want a more upright version or a softer one that is cozy to curl up on?

Modern ottomans are not simply foot-rests. Many can double as a decorative storage space since they have a cozy hollow interior. And when entertaining friends, a comfortable ottoman adds to the seating arrangements. Some people also opt to use an ottoman as a coffee table.

Ottomans are easy to maintain. By using colorful and chic slipcovers, you can continuously alter the decorum of your living room. In addition to this, it is less of a hassle to wash the seating covers themselves.
